Fix stock cosmetic damage on exahust tips on 2002 grand am gt coupe.?

i have a 2002 grand am gt coupe and i love this car. my stock exhaust is a 4 pipe off the muffler and they look chrome color but it looks like the paint is chipping away. Sorry im not a mechanic so im not sure if they were chrome to start with basically the tips are silver/metal color is chipping away and is there any thing i can do to fix it. would chrome paint work?? there shape is wider at end so putting aftermarket tips over them wont fit. sorry if i seem clueless not much of a mechanicnic just like my car to look nice. thanks for any help you can give.
