What does VTEC do for me as a driver?

What exactly does it do for me? Like I know how it works with the camshaft and valves and all that but what does all that lingo mean for me as a driver? And also, how can I tell if I have it in my car, I drive I 2001 Honda Civic EX Coupe. And also, if I do have it, what's the rpm level that it kicks in?
